POLYTROL GFT

MODIFIED ORGANIC THIXOTROPE FOR NON-AQUEOUS COATINGS,

INKS, ADHESIVES, CAULKS AND SEALANTS

POLYTROL GFT is an improvement over POLYTROL FT. It disperses more quickly while providing all of the properties of POLYTROL FT. The improvement involves modification of the individual particles enabling better dispersion efficiency,--more effective swelling and gelling. POLYTROL GFT is superior to POLYTHIX GM. Demonstrating in a Warring blender (typical mineral spirits system with no pigment), POLYTROL GFT will reach a Hegman reading (fineness of grind) in a shorter period than POLYTROL FT. Conversely, by the same procedure, for a given time period the Hegman reading will be superior to that for POLYTROL FT. Typical of the organic thixotropes, POLYTROL GFT imparts a characteristic,--"butteryness", advantageous to coatings, inks, adhesives, caulks and sealants.

Applications

Ø Architectural Paints, Sealers, Stains, Primers and Undercoats

Ø Maintenance Paints

Ø Marine Primers and Finishes

Ø Industrial Coatings and Product Finishes

Ø Road Marking Paints

Ø Aerosols

Ø Printing Inks and Adhesives

Ø Caulks, Putty and Sealants

Ø Polyester and Epoxy Patching compounds, Cold Solders, Gel Coats

Ø Mastic and Trowel Compounds

Ø Asphaltic and Bituminous Products

As an improvement over POLTROL FT it is highly recommended for the thick film, high build protective coatings based on chlorinated rubber, vinyls and epoxy polyamides (Navy Specification MIL-P-24441). It is the most efficient means for providing Thixotropy in these systems which cannot tolerate reactivity, pin holing, etc.

Performance Features

Ø Viscosity Increase

Ø Rapid Development of Thixotropy

Ø Pigment Suspension

Ø Optimum Balance Between Sag Control and Leveling

Ø Penetration Control

Ø No Affect on Color, Gloss, Water Resistance or Durability

Ø Maximum Rheological Value

Coatings containing POLYTROL GFT are truly thixotropic, having a specific but short period of viscosity recovery. This time-dependency factor is a characteristic of thixotropy and is preferred over pseudoplastic gallants because it provides for flow-out (leveling) without impairing sag control.

The thixotropy of POLYTROL GFT identifies with two factors: (1) the solubility parameter of the vehicle solids, which vary according to the nature of the binder, and (2) the solvent power of the solvents. A primary rule for developing thixotropy calls for thorough dispersion and swelling of the particles, followed by shearing in the vehicle-pigment system.

Processing

In high-speed dispersers, POLYTROL GFT is added to the vehicle and some solvent for a ten-minute premix. The pigments and other components are added followed by high-shear dispersion for 10-15 minutes. The temperature range will be 130°–180°F (35°–82°C) for systems containing aliphatic solvents and at 90°–120°F (33°–49°C) for those containing aromatics, oxygenated or ester solvents. Letdown vehicle (and solvent) are then added with agitation continuing while the batch cools to at least 120°F.

For sand mills and attritors the dwell time is so short as to not allow for complete dispersion and swelling. This suggests premixing in a high-speed disperser according to the above procedure.

Usage Level

POLYTROL GFT is effective at 0.5% to 1.5% by weight on the total composition. The exact amount will depend on the specific formulation and desired rheological properties. Preliminary evaluation is suggested at about seven pounds per 100 gallons – adequate as a starting point for conventional paints and coatings. At this level the formulator can observe primary characteristics, making further adjustments according to the finished product requirements.
