POLYTROL FT

ORGANIC RHEOLOGICAL AGENT FOR NON-AQUEOUS COATINGS,

INKS, ADHESIVES, CAULKS AND SEALANTS

POLYTROL FT is a white powder that provides a high degree of thixotropy for pigmented systems containing aliphatic and aromatic solvents with oils, resins, varnishes and a polymer vehicle. It increases viscosity particularly in the ultra low shear range, provides pigment suspension, prevents sag and control penetration. The addition of POLYTROL FT provides flow control, the highly desirable optimum balance between sag control and leveling. Systems containing POLYTROL FT have a characteristic property, -- "butteryness," a practical demonstration of thixotropy which is evident in all products whether coatings, inks, adhesives or caulk/sealants.

Applications

Ø Architectural Paints, Including Sealers, Stains Primers and Undercoats

Ø Maintenance Paints

Ø Marine Primers and Finishes

Ø Industrial Coatings and Product Finishes

Ø Traffic Paints

Ø Aerosols

Ø Printing Inks and Adhesives

Ø Caulks, Putty and Sealants

Ø Patching compounds, cold Solders, Gel Coats

Ø Mastic and Trowel Compounds

Ø Asphaltic and Bituminous Products

POLYTROL FT is widely accepted for the highly durable thick film (high build) protective coatings based on chlorinated rubber, vinyls and epoxy-polyamides (Navy Specification MIL-P-24441).

Performance Features

Ø Maximum Rheological Value

Ø Viscosity Increase

Ø Rapid Development of Thixotropy

Ø Pigment Suspension

Ø Non-Penetration

Ø Optimum Balance Between Sag Control and Leveling

Ø No Affect on Color, Gloss, Water Resistance or Durability

Coatings containing POLYTROL FT are truly thixotropic; they have a specific but short period of viscosity recovery. This time-dependency is preferred over ordinary pseudoplastic thickening because POLTYROL FT allows for flow-out and leveling.

The thixotropy of POLYTROL FT is associated with two factors: (1) the solvent power of the solvents and (2) the solubility parameter of the vehicle solids, which vary according to the nature of the binder. A primary rule in developing the thixotropy calls for thorough dispersion and swelling of the particles. This is achieved by adequately shearing it in vehicle.

Processing

In high-speed dispersers, POLYTROL FT should be sprinkled into vehicle and some solvent for a ten-minute premix stage after which the pigments and other components are added. Dispersion should follow for 10-15 minutes in the range of 130°–180°F (35°–82°C) for systems based on aliphatic solvents and at 90°–120°F (33°–49°C) for those based on aromatics, oxygenated or ester solvents. Letdown vehicle (and or solvent) is added with agitation continuing while the batch cools to at least 120°F.

For sand mills and attritors the dwell time is so short as to not allow for complete dispersion and swelling. This suggests premixing in a high-speed disperser according to the above procedure.

Usage Level

POLYTROL FT is effective at 0.25% to 1.25% by weight on the total composition. The exact amount will depend on the specific formulation and desired rheological properties. Evaluation is suggested at about five pounds per 100 gallons – adequate as a starting point for conventional paints and coatings. At this level the formulator can observe primary characteristics, making further adjustments according to the finished product requirements.
